Gus Farnes: Biography
Born in Ipswich in 1984, Gus Farnes is a sculptor whose practice delves into the connections between history, nature, and identity through evocative sculptural forms.
Inspired by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi, Bernard Meadows, Franz West, Clive Sheppard, Joan Miró, Lynn Chadwick, and Germaine Richier, Farnes discovered his passion for bronze casting at a young age. At 16, he successfully coaxed graduates from the Royal College of Art at a Suffolk foundry to help him learn fine art casting, an experience that inextricably connected him to form and process. This initial encounter led him to study fine art at the Norwich School of Art & Design.
After graduating in 2004, Farnes moved to London where he worked for Sotheby's as a graphic artist and maintained a studio with ACME, actively pursuing his sculptural practice. In 2016, he relocated to Suffolk and established his own studio and foundry, fully realising his artistic vision in bronze.
With sculptures held in collections internationally and featured in public exhibitions, Farnes practice offers a thoughtful and resonant contribution to contemporary sculpture.
