Gus Farnes: A creative journey

Led by interests in history, the natural world and identity, Farnes sculpts using materials sampled from his local situation. These influences converge resulting in pieces that reflect a connection to his surroundings and an exploration of personal and collective heritage. By incorporating materials sourced from his immediate environment, Farnes imbues his sculptures with a sense of place, invoking a dialogue between past and present.

Creative flow

In my studio, I'm immersed in creativity and inspiration. Maquettes line the walls, reflecting my journey. The warm light and radio set the perfect ambiance. With tools and materials, I find solace in creating. Time ceases to exist as I bring ideas to life. My studio is a sanctuary for expression.

Bronze casting

With passion, creativity, and resourcefulness, I built my own foundry. I crafted a workshop, equipped with a custom-built furnace, enabling me to realise my sculptures in bronze, bringing them to life. This journey instilled a sense of accomplishment and independence. Through careful planning, research, and investment, my foundry became a reality.

Final touch

Sculpture is a rewarding journey, filled with uncertainty, commitment, and persistence. The final stroke or mark, signifies the materialisation of a creative idea. As an idea becomes real the burden dissipates, replaced by a sense of accomplishment and pride.
